Low MOQ Clothing Manufacturing: Minimums by Style, Color and Size

MOQ means minimum order quantity. In clothing manufacturing, the number only becomes useful when you know what it applies to: the whole order, one style, one color or a particular material.

For a startup seeking a low MOQ clothing manufacturer, the first decision is whether you need an original garment or an existing style with branding options. These routes involve different development work and can have different minimums, even when offered by the same supplier.

Before comparing manufacturers, ask for the minimum in a complete sentence. “Six units per style and color” means something different from “sixty units per style.” Valbrand’s catalog and full-package manufacturing routes use different starting conditions.

How do I choose a low MOQ manufacturer for a small brand?

Start with your product category and the number of units you can order per style. Ask each supplier whether it offers custom development, existing catalog products or both. Compare sampling, branding options, reorder conditions and shipping to your US address alongside the minimum. A supplier’s smallest advertised order may apply only to selected products.

Understand the three parts of a quantity breakdown

  • Style: a specific garment design or product reference.
  • Color: a color option within that style.
  • Size: the size distribution within a style and color.

Suppliers may also have material, printing, label or packaging minimums. A garment minimum does not automatically apply to every optional service.

Example: catalog activewear from 6 units

Wholesale VAB’s activewear starting minimum is 6 units per style and color, with mixed sizes. For an illustration, suppose you select one reference in two available colors:

SelectionSize SSize MSize LTotal
Style A, color 12226
Style A, color 22226
Order total44412

This is an example of the counting method, not a confirmation of stock or available colors. Adding a second style in one color would add another minimum group of six. Ask the team to confirm available sizes and the split for your selected references.

Read the activewear ordering guide for the catalog route. Check minimums for sleepwear, streetwear and additional branding separately.

Example: full-package production from 60 units

Valbrand’s full-package starting point is 60 units per style, with up to 2 colors and 3 sizes per style, subject to project review. Two original styles would therefore start at 120 garments if both qualify for that minimum.

Do not assume that any color or size allocation is accepted. Send your proposed breakdown and ask the team to confirm it based on the fabric, construction and production requirements. See the full-package guide for the steps before production approval.

A small minimum is one part of the decision

Sampling, design work and patterns can be separate costs. Labels, packaging and transport can also affect the amount you need to budget. Ask which costs are fixed for the project and which change with quantity.

For a US delivery, request shipping for your destination ZIP code and clarify responsibility for import charges. Compare the total quoted order cost rather than multiplying a garment price by the minimum and treating that as the final budget.

A smaller initial order can limit inventory exposure, but it does not establish customer demand. Select a range you can explain, photograph and sell, and ask how reorders are handled before planning repeat launches.

Questions to send with your quote request

  1. Does the minimum apply per style, per color or to the whole order?
  2. Which sizes can be combined, and in what quantities?
  3. Do the selected fabric or branding options change the minimum?
  4. What sample and development costs are separate?
  5. How are availability, delivery and reorders confirmed?

If you are still choosing a route, read private label vs. custom clothing manufacturing. Then send your references and quantity breakdown to Valbrand for a project-specific review.
