Private Label vs. Custom Clothing Manufacturing: Which Route Fits Your Brand?

Private Label vs. Custom Clothing Manufacturing: Which Route Fits Your Brand?

If you want clothing manufactured with your own label, you can begin with an original design or with garments that have already been developed. Both can support a thoughtful collection. For a startup brand, boutique or online store, the right choice depends on how much you need to change the product, the quantities you can order and the work you are ready to manage.

At Valbrand, you can compare these starting points through our private label and OEM manufacturing offer for US brands. Custom development and Wholesale VAB catalog orders have different scopes and minimums.

Start with the product, then choose the service

If the fit, construction or silhouette is central to your concept, custom manufacturing gives you a process for developing those specifications. If an existing style fits your customer, a catalog can give you a concrete starting point to evaluate.

Industry labels are not always used consistently. “Private label” may describe an existing garment with your branding or a more customized program. “OEM” commonly refers to producing to a buyer’s specifications. Ask what the supplier actually includes rather than relying on the label alone.

Can I buy ready-designed clothes and add my brand?

A boutique, studio or online store may want to assess a small selection before expanding its range. Wholesale VAB offers existing activewear, sleepwear and streetwear references. Review the actual product details and ask about a sample before committing to your assortment.

For catalog activewear, the documented starting minimum is 6 units per style and color, with mixed sizes. This does not mean six garments spread across any combination of styles. Check the conditions for sleepwear, streetwear and additional customization separately.

Ask which logo applications and labels are available, whether they carry extra costs and whether they change the minimum. Existing catalog styles should not be assumed exclusive to your store.

For a private label pajama range, explore the sleepwear ordering guide. For activewear, shortlist the products that suit your boutique or fitness studio. In either case, ask for samples, the current size chart and a shipping quote for your US destination before finalizing the assortment.

When custom development is the better fit

Choose custom development when an existing product cannot deliver the fit, material combination or construction you need. A clear brief helps establish whether the concept is feasible and what must be developed.

Valbrand’s full-package starting point is 60 units per style, with up to 2 colors and 3 sizes per style, subject to project review. Confirm the precise size and color distribution in your quote. The full-package manufacturing guide explains the approval stages.

Compare the whole order

Separate development and sampling from garment costs. Then account for branding, packaging and delivery to your US ZIP code. Ask who is responsible for import charges and confirm the quote currency. A low unit price does not tell you the total cost of getting the collection ready to sell.

For either route, request written confirmation of specifications, approved samples, quantities, payment terms and timing. If you need help evaluating a supplier, read our guide to finding a reliable clothing manufacturer in Colombia.

Prepare your next step

Make a shortlist of catalog references or prepare a brief with visual references, quantities and your launch date. Then compare the two routes and contact Valbrand. You do not need to decide every detail before the first conversation, but a defined product direction makes that conversation more useful.
